The administration of justice, including the safeguarding of the independence and dignity of the prosecution service are among the fundamentals of a democratic institutional system. The prosecution service cannot become a tool in the struggles of political actors or a stage where every-day political interests or power plays occur. In order to make this clear, by addressing my statement – through the interim President of Hungary – to the Deputy Speaker of Parliament serving in the capacity of the Speaker of Parliament, I have submitted my resignation and initiated the termination of my mandate as Prosecutor General as of 25 August 2026.
By me being personally targeted, the organization I have been heading has recently been subjected to a series of attacks that go far beyond the bounds of acceptable professional and public debates although I have performed my duties and responsibilities in compliance with the laws and by giving considerations to professional aspects only. Neither I nor any members of my family have been associated with political parties throughout my career, and I have held the position of Prosecutor General for a little over a year. In addition to statements made by political figures – which in many cases contain falsehoods – it is becoming increasingly common for participants in criminal proceedings, including defence lawyers acting as legal representatives, to use their own cases to launch politically motivated attacks against certain actors within the justice system, including the prosecution service. These unjustified statements no longer affect only me and my office; they endanger the prestige of the prosecution service, violate its independence, and undermine public trust in the work of the more than four thousand professionals employed there.
It sends an extremely negative message when public figures demand the dismissal of the incumbent Prosecutor General simply because ongoing criminal proceedings do not align with their expectations. This creates a dangerous precedent, forcing the Prosecutor General of the day to fear removal from office if their actions fail to satisfy political demands.
The sole reason for my resignation from the position of Prosecutor General is to safeguard the interests of the prosecution service. Under no circumstances must the operation and independence of the institution suffer harm due to the ignoble, politically motivated attacks surrounding the Prosecutor General. I refuse to remain part of a conflict that is generated around my person based on falsehoods, serving political motives and becoming a tool for the further erosion of public trust in the institution.
