The members of the Network of Public Prosecutors or equivalent institutions at the Supreme Judicial Courts of the Member States of the European Union (NADAL NETWORK) are meeting for the sixteenth time on 22-23 May 2025. The event is attended by around 100 high-ranking representatives from 40 countries and international organisations, including 25 prosecutors general.
Dr Péter Polt, President of the Network, welcomed the conference participants. He also informed them that this was his last appearance as Hungary’s Prosecutor General, as on 20 May he had been elected Constitutional Court Judge by the National Assembly and would therefore be continuing his legal career at the Constitutional Court from 10 June. Dr. Péter Polt introduced Dr. Gábor Bálint Nagy, prosecutor, head of the Cabinet at the Office of the Prosecutor General, who had been nominated for the position of Prosecutor General by Dr. Tamás Sulyok, President of the Republic.
Dr. László Kövér, Speaker of the National Assembly, gave a historical overview in his welcoming speech, reminding the audience that there are several rule of law solutions for the operation of public prosecutor's offices across Europe. The constitutional and social order of a state can be effectively maintained if the various institutions, even those belonging to different branches of power, operate within a coherent system. The Speaker of the National Assembly thanked Dr. Péter Polt for his work as Prosecutor General and emphasised that the international recognition of the Hungarian Prosecution Service is also demonstrated by the fact that the Prosecutor General is now serving as the President of the NADAL Network for the second time.
In his opening address, Dr. Péter Polt emphasised the significance of the fact that, in the 16 years since the Network was established, the 154-year-old Hungarian Prosecution Service is once again hosting the event after 2012. The members of the Network always strive to discuss the most topical issues that are of concern to all participants. Accordingly, the three panels of the Budapest conference will focus on crimes committed in the online space, issues related to the digital transition of the justice system, and domestic and international experiences in combating environmental crime.
Dr. Róbert Répássy, Deputy Minister of Justice and Parliamentary State Secretary, drew the participants’ attention to the fact that the priority objectives of the Ministry of Justice include expanding and strengthening the rights of victims and providing assistance to victims of crime. The fight against cybercrime is also a priority area for the legislator, and the Prosecution Service is an important and essential partner in both areas.
